The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians have traded blows through four games of their American League Division Series, and now everything comes down to one final meeting Saturday night at Progressive Field. With the series tied 2-2, the division rivals will battle for a spot in the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on TBS and truTV.
Chicago appeared to have Cleveland on the ropes after taking both games on the road to open the series. The White Sox blanked the Guardians 3-0 in Game 1 before holding on for a 4-3 victory in Game 2, putting themselves in position to close things out in front of their home crowd.
Instead, Cleveland stormed back with consecutive wins at Rate Field, scoring nine runs in each contest to erase its two-game deficit.
The Guardians broke through with a 9-3 victory Wednesday before producing another nine-run performance in Thursday’s Game 4. Chicago led 4-3 entering the sixth inning, but Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs to turn the game around. José Ramírez homered earlier in the contest, while Jo Adell delivered a two-run single during the decisive rally.
That leaves both clubs in an unusual position heading into Game 5. Cleveland has all the momentum after winning twice with its season on the line, but the White Sox have already shown they can win games at Progressive Field.
In fact, the visiting team has won every game of the series. Saturday’s finale will determine whether that pattern continues or Cleveland completes a remarkable and rare comeback from an 0-2 series deficit.
White Sox vs. Guardians Odds Today
Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook has Cleveland listed as the favorite for Saturday’s decisive Game 5:
White Sox vs. Guardians Prediction
Chicago White Sox Moneyline (+115): The White Sox have watched their 2-0 series lead disappear, but we’re backing Chicago to bounce back and finish the job Saturday night in Cleveland.
According to Hard Rock Bet’s Stats Hub, the Guardians have lost each of their last six games as home favorites following a road win.
Chicago also might have the advantage on the mound. The White Sox are expected to hand the bulk of Saturday’s work to Sean Burke, who has been one of the team’s postseason heroes. Burke was outstanding in Game 2, limiting Cleveland to one run on one hit over 5.1 innings while striking out six.
The Guardians, meanwhile, have had to make some difficult pitching decisions just to reach this point. Cleveland has leaned heavily on Cade Smith in all four games, and also called upon Gavin Williams to finish the ninth inning in Game 4, adding another wrinkle to its plans for Saturday.
And while Cleveland has seized control of the series over the last two games, Chicago has already proven it can win on the road in this matchup. The visiting team is a perfect 4-0 through the first four games, and we’re taking the underdog Sox to make it five straight road victories in this winner-take-all contest.
