I’ve got three underdogs worth a look for Week 6 of college football.
If they happen to all win outright, it pays 56-1 at Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook.
Let’s get right into it.
Kentucky +8.5 vs. LSU
I think Will Stein has done a great job in Lexington so far.
The Wildcats already won at Texas A&M. They got the best of me with the 2.5 at South Carolina, winning 35-34 in overtime after falling behind 17-0.
And their reward for that comeback? Getting dropped out of the AP Top 25.
This is a 4-1 Wildcats team whose only loss came against Alabama, a team they were tied with at halftime.
Kenny Minchey has 11 touchdown passes and just one interception on the season.
But most importantly, this defense has held three of its five opponents to 21 points or fewer.
And my favorite thing about underdogs is when they’re winning the turnover battle. This team is +5 in turnover margin, with 10 takeaways on the season.
Now, let’s talk about LSU, who’s also 4-1, but enter their second road game of the season.
In that first one, we saw them go down 32-24 at Ole Miss.
Sam Leavitt is still hurt. He did not run the ball against McNeese, and he’s now thrown seven interceptions on the season.
The Tigers not leaving Baton Rouge in three weeks is not a good thing.
And oh, by the way, who do they have coming to town next week? Maybe a guy named Kamario Taylor and Mississippi State.
Could this be a possible look-ahead spot? I don’t know.
We’ve got Kentucky at home at night. The last time LSU came to Lexington, Kentucky won 42-21.
Take Kentucky +8.5. And of course, sprinkle a little bit on that +275 moneyline.
Syracuse +9.5 at Virginia
You guys are gonna call me a hypocrite here, and that’s okay. But Syracuse changed quarterbacks, and it worked.
Fran Brown went to Amari Odom last week. He finished 27-37 with 335 yards and five touchdowns in a crazy, high-scoring 42-41 win at UConn.
It was time to move away from Steve Angeli. Five interceptions in three games. It was the right call.
He’s also got Umari Hatcher, who caught 12 passes for 152 yards and three scores last week. He now has 434 receiving yards in four games.
Let’s look at this Virginia team.
They’re coming off an absolute beatdown in Tallahassee, a 38-7 loss at Florida State.
Beau Pribula finished 14-32, and lost 62 yards on the ground.
When I read that, I was like, “Wait, this can’t be right.” I had to Google it to make sure it was accurate.
62 yards lost.
The Cavaliers also had a bad loss against West Virginia. Do you guys remember that? Country Roads got us home, 38-27 there in Charlotte.
And let’s examine Virginia’s other three wins: NC State, Norfolk State, Delaware.
This is the Orange’s third straight road game, but I do believe Od0m gives this offense a different look than we saw in that loss at Pittsburgh, which is why I think his second game for Syracuse is worth looking at on the moneyline at +275.
Take Syracuse +9.5, and I think Syracuse +275 is worth a play.
Vanderbilt +9.5 vs. Ole Miss
And this is usually the spot where I give you guys a double-digit underdog. And this is usually the spot where you guys groan.
Tulsa, Iowa State, West Virginia, Minnesota and last week, Purdue.
Yeah, I know that one looked ugly, but it was easy.
And now I have bad news because I don’t have a double-digit underdog for Week 6.
I didn’t want to force it. And so you guys get stuck with a 9.5-point underdog. It’s close enough, right?
Vanderbilt +9.5.
I just like waiting for Ole Miss fans in the comments section to be mad at me.
But instead of being mad at me, they should be mad at their defense.
Yeah, the same one that gave up 52 points in their last game at Florida and has allowed 38 or more twice in four games.
They’re giving up more than 30 points and 195 rushing yards per game. They are -4 in turnover margin.
Well, the argument can be Ole Miss has now had two weeks to stew over Florida.
And this kind of goes against our dog winning outright, but hear me out.
Vanderbilt is back at home after SEC road trips to Auburn and Georgia, in which they covered both.
This is their first game back in Nashville since beating NC State 35-31 three weeks ago.
Who do the Rebels have on deck? Oh, wait. Top 25 teams in Missouri and Texas.
The question here is Jared Curtis. The freshman bruised his knee in that six-point loss at Auburn and sat out at Georgia, where Blaze Berlowitz went 12-23 for 190 yards and a touchdown. But Vanderbilt trailed just 21-14 at halftime in Athens.
Clark Lea says Curtis is day-to-day as of Thursday. We’re going to hope he’s back for this one.
He has 746 passing yards, four touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground.
But the main reason why we like Vanderbilt here is that defense, allowing just 3.8 yards a carry, with 14 sacks in five games.
You guys have heard me say this for the last, well, decade.
Take the better defense plus the points. And I also think you take the better defense to win outright at +300.
